| Comments: | I remember the days of those performances when we (Turbulent Gravy) would crack out Stranglehold and follow Rondos' cues as to which way the song would go. Sometimes it would head towards the James Gangs' "The Bomber" and other times it would head towards Deep Purples' "Spacetruckin." It was ALWAYS different. You just would never know. It would always, sooner or later, tastefully, come back to Stranglehold. Someone once told me we did a version that was 40 minutes. He really loved solos. As which he should,...he was and is magnificent. God I'll miss him. I wanted to originally post a question here but then Ryan got me thinkin of Rondos' Stranglehold. I was out in Sturgis playing shows at the time, then we received word that he had passed away. We were all saddened and shocked. Every night we played at the rally we dedicated "Stranglehold" to him and remembered him as our friend, and as a fellow musician and how great of a person he truly was. An ironic and sad time for me to hear of his passing as 4 years prior, he made it out to Sturgis and made sure to make it to one of my shows. I'll never forget turning to my left and looking down and seeing him root me on with those glasses on and a huge smile on his face in a packed venue. He always commended me on my efforts, and always said I was the only guy he knew that never aged, lol. I'll never forget those things about him. | Comments: | My favorite memories of Rondo were sitting in with Scratch for a couple of songs last spring at the Checkerboard and having him compliment my playing. A few years back he loaned me a Telecaster with the instructions to beat it until it behaves after a troublesome night at the 3rd Rock. After checking with Kenbone to see if he was serious I bashed it up the next night at the 'Shor and then returned it. Rondo tuned it up, through on a few strings and then just wailed through it for a set claiming that was exactly what the guitar needed. One of the best bar room hero guitarists ever. My sincere condolences to his friends and family. |

Well on are last trip to Duluth the night before we came back home Kenny gets a call from Rondo and says he's gonna be at the 3rd Rock for the Sunday jam that night and Kenny needs to bring his Cali friends. When Raven and I were together, we helped out with the remodeling that last few weeks before 3rd Rock opened, and I really got to know Rondo on a level other than the business/party side. What a genuine person, and a great man. He paid me some of the greatest compliments a musician can pay another musician, and I'll always remember that. | Comments: | We will all miss Rondo. He was one of a kind. I played with him in Lezlie Thriller. He could judge talent without judging and play better than most musicans I have ever met. Nothing mattered to him more than to just go out and play his guitar. I remember playing with him at Ryans in St.Paul and he walked into the club dragging his guitar behind him. I thought, wow this guy is really different,and quite unique to say the least. Later that night after we got done playing, Rondo and I were in the basement of Ryans writing songs and talking for hours. Of course we lost track of time as him and I would do quite often. After he put the broken end of a bottle of beer that he drank on stage he gouged himself in the chest during my drum solo. Right before my eyes! Well that night turned into morning as we walked into the bar of ryans we had no idea that it was 9am! I have many more fond memeories of my dear friend, Rondo. Love you forever, Billy Thayer |
